Chargers’ Ty Long going back to strictly punting

Ty Long’s kicking duties are officially over.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that Long will go back to strictly punting and will not kick off or kick field goals during this weekend’s matchup against the Broncos.

Long, who got dinged up during last Sunday’s victory over the Dolphins, is dealing with pain in his plant foot and the team wants to reduce the amount of the load.

In four games as the team’s kicker, Long was 7-of-9 on field goals with a long of 51 yards and he was a perfect 9-of-9 on extra points.

Lynn said that there’s a good chance that newly acquired kicker Chase McLaughlin will kick for the Chargers this weekend since Michael Badgley is still dealing with some pain in his groin.

Lynn also said that if the rookie kicker does well, then he and Badgley could have a kicking competition for the permanent starting job.
