Chargers’ Tom Telesco expresses confidence in Tyrod Taylor, talks Cam Newton

The biggest headline surrounding the Chargers this offseason is what life after Philip Rivers will look like.

After coming up short in the sweepstakes for Tom Brady, general manager Tom Telesco is fully confident that the team will be in good hands with Tyrod Taylor under center next season.

“We have confidence in Tyrod Taylor,” Telesco said on ESPN’s “Get Up”. “Just as important, his teammates have confidence in Tyrod, so that’s where we are right now. We’re very happy with that, and other than that, we’re really pretty much all draft-focused right now.

Free agency obviously goes on forever. Free agency never ends, but the main part of free agency has kind of passed, and we’re strictly in draft mode, but we’re excited about Tyrod. We think he can do a lot of things for us. Anthony Lynn has a lot of confidence in him, and we’ll be ready to go.”

Taylor signed a two-year deal last offseason. After serving as Rivers’ backup this past season, he believes Los Angeles will turn heads in 2020 with him as the starting signal-caller.

Even though the team has expressed their full belief in Taylor, chatter of them signing a quarterback like Cam Newton has yet to come to an end. Telesco continued to downplay all of the rumors and speculations.

“Well Cam, like every player that becomes available, we always talk about things internally, but like I said before, we’re very confident in Tyrod Taylor to run our offense the way we want it to run,” Telesco said.

“We’ll always monitor what’s available out in free agency and on the street, but right now it’s really 100 percent draft-focused, and obviously with the logistics going on with this draft this year from home, it’s taking us a little extra time and work.”

Telesco and the rest of the front office have shifted their attention towards the upcoming draft after signing a handful of players in free agency.

Based on his comments, he may have indicated that the team is intrigued with the crop of quarterbacks early on and they’re eyeing selecting one and using Taylor as the bridge rather than signing one such as Newton.
