Chargers to sign WR James Jones

James Jones saw Philip Rivers throw for 503 yards in Green Bay last season.

Now, he'll be on the other end.

The former Packer was one of three free-agent wide receivers to work out for the Chargers on Tuesday. He was selected to be signed afterward, sources said. Lance Moore and Brian Hartline also were evaluated, as the team sought to add veteran depth following a Sunday knee injury to wide receiver Stevie Johnson.

Last October, Rivers became the ninth NFL player since the 2000 season to surpass 500 passing yards in a game.

While it came in a losing effort, the Week 5 performance apparently left an impression. Jones is the second opposing player on the field that day to join the Chargers in free agency this offseason; cornerback Casey Hayward signed in March.

Jones, 32, is a San Jose native who spent eight of his first nine NFL seasons in Green Bay. He caught 50 passes for a career-high 890 yards in 2015 with eight touchdowns. Against the Chargers, he had two catches for 30 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Johnson, 30, is scheduled to undergo knee surgery this week for a meniscus tear.

How much time he'll miss will become known after the procedure, coach Mike McCoy said Monday.
