Chargers: Talk of possible London move is 'just nonsense'

Chargers owner Dean Spanos is giving no thought to relocating from Los Angeles and is fully committed to the team's L.A. venture.

That was the clear, firm message Tuesday from Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani in response to a report in the Athletic that the team would consider relocating to London.

"There's absolutely no truth to the idea that Dean Spanos would consider anything other than building his fan base in Los Angeles," Fabiani said. "The idea that he would consider any other option is just nonsense."

The Chargers, who moved from San Diego in 2017, have a 20-year lease with the Rams on an Inglewood stadium that is to open next year. The Chargers hold two 10-year options after the lease expires that can be exercised solely at their discretion.

"The Chargers negotiated a very favorable stadium agreement for the franchise, which leaves the franchise a long runway on which to try to build a fan base," Fabiani said.

The NFL provided the Chargers the first option over the Raiders to join the Rams in the Inglewood venue. Also the NFL provided debt terms to spread out the $650 million relocation fee over 10 years. Those payments are to begin next summer.

"Dean has no intention of doing anything else other than building his fan base in L.A. So that goes for London. That goes for any other city in the world. That goes for Mars and Jupiter and the moon. He's not considering anything else other than building the fan base in L.A.," Fabiani said.

"When people see the new stadium and can actually go there and be part of it, that's going to be huge for both teams, for both the Rams and the Chargers."

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who supported Rams owner Stan Kroenke relocating his franchise from St. Louis to L.A., also poured cold water on the notion Spanos would consider moving the Chargers to London.

"No," Jones said, per 105.3 The Fan in Dallas-Fort Worth. "You're asking me the question: Is it a viable option? And, no. The Chargers are committed to their future in Los Angeles and are going to be in a fabulous stadium. ... They're going to be a big part of the Los Angeles sports scene."
