Chargers slightly miss top-10 in latest WR, TE rankings

The Chargers possess one of the league’s most dynamic duos at the wide receiver position in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Tyrell Williams helped create a formidable trio the past few seasons, but now that Los Angeles doesn’t have him anymore, how does the team fare?

In Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski’s ranking of all wideouts and tight ends for every team in the NFL, the Bolts are in a relatively good spot, checking in at No. 11 overall.

Here is what Sobleski had to say about the pass-catchers for L.A.

Allen is already one of the league’s premier wide receivers, as he’s had 199 receptions and 2,589 yards over the last two seasons. Williams could find himself in similar territory.

“He had a great year for us,” general manager Tom Telesco told reportersat the NFL Scouting Combine, “but we’re also in an offense where we have a lot of guys to get the football to, so he didn’t have 80, 90 or 100 catches, but he has that type of ability.”

The 2017 seventh overall pick caught 66 passes for 664 yards and 10 touchdowns in his second season. Plus, his target share should increase after Tyrell Williams signed with the Oakland Raiders in free agency.

Benjamin will continue in his role as a vertical threat. Henry is also back, healthy and running well after missing all of last season with a torn ACL.

The ranking doesn’t come as much of a surprise since the numbers racked up between Allen and Williams alone last season are very promising. The two combined for 140 receptions, 1,860 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Quarterback Philip Rivers will have Allen and Williams as his go-to options, but he will also get a completely healthy tight end Hunter Henry back, as well. Henry missed all of the 2018 regular season, as we recovering from a torn ACL that he sustained in OTAs last year.

The former Arkansas product has proven to be one of the league’s better tight ends in his two seasons that he’s played in. Entering his fourth year, Henry is eyeing a big season. In two campaigns, he has amassed 81 catches, 1,057 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Outside of those three, it’s an open competition for the No. 3 and 4 wide receiver roles. It’s likely that one goes to Travis Benjamin, who has the experience under his belt and the coaching staff covets him for his speed.

Artavis Scott, Dylan Cantrell, Geremy Davis are the top candidates for the other spot. The Chargers, who are notorious for finding undrafted gems, could see one emerge over these players, too.
