Chargers sign CB Dontae Johnson, place Trevor Williams on IR

The Chargers are signing cornerback Dontae Johnson on Wednesday.

To make room for Johnson, Los Angeles placed CB Trevor Williams, who’s been dealing with a quad injury on the injured reserve.

Thin at the cornerback position, Los Angeles had to quickly make a move to shore up the position, which is why they decided to bring in Johnson.

Drafted in the fourth-round of the 2014 draft, Johnson spent four years with the 49ers. He appeared in 63 games (22 starts) and posted 149 tackles, 21 passes defensed and two interceptions returned for touchdowns. In 2018, he played with the Seahawks, Bills and Cardinals, but did not see game action.

San Francisco brought him back in for a second stint this summer. Despite amassing three interceptions throughout the course of the preseason, the 49ers were content with their cornerback room going into the regular season, so they elected to release him on cutdown day.
