Chargers select Notre Dame DT Jerry Tillery with No. 28 overall pick

The Chargers upgraded the defensive line with the selection of former Notre Dame defensive tackle Jerry Tillery at No. 28 overall in the first round of the 2019 draft.

Tillery showed the potential of a starting NFL interior defensive lineman during his breakout 2018 season.

He has the athleticism of a defensive end and the power of a nose tackle. His flashes are similar to former Notre Dame and current Steelers defensive tackle Stephon Tuitt on the field, displaying the traits that Los Angeles covets.

Tillery wins with his strong upper body and hands to stack, jolt and toss obstacles in his way, showing the ability to get after the quarterback and reset the line of scrimmage.

He appeared to have character concerns early on in his collegiate career, but those must’ve checked out when he met with the Bolts during the pre-draft process.

This is a home run selection for L.A. at the end of the first round.
