With a choice of several top defensive players, the Chargers _ drafting for the first time as a Los Angeles team _ instead selected Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams in the No. 7 overall pick of Thursday's NFL draft.
Williams is the highest-drafted receiver in team history; the previous record was held by John Jefferson, who went 14th in 1978, according to ESPN.
At 6-foot-4, 218 pounds, Williams gives Philip Rivers a big target on the outside in the mold of former Chargers Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson.
Last season Williams caught 84 passes for 1,171 yards and 10 touchdowns and was named a second-tam All-American. The NFL.com draft profile compared him with former NFL star Plaxico Burress.
