Chargers select a riser in latest NFL mock draft

The Chargers are one of the most notorious at giving zero hints on who they are going to select in the NFL drafts. While media pundits consistently mock three of four players to them throughout the draft process, Los Angeles always pulls the unthinkable.

Throughout the past few months it’s been a combination of Clemson’s Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence or Notre Dame’s Jerry Tillery. But a new potential name has emerged with Washington offensive tackle Kaleb McGary in NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein’s latest mock draft.

The Chargers could also look at defensive tackle here, but McGary offers the Chargers a big, athletic right tackle with a mean streak.

L.A.’s current biggest need is at the right tackle position and McGary would offer an immediate upgrade over Sam Tevi, who struggled in his sophomore season.

McGary, the former Husky, started the beginning of the 2018 season as a relative unknown. But a strong showing at the 2019 Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine helped his draft stock skyrocket.

The 6-foot-7 and 317 pounder thrives in pass protection, using his athletic feet and strong hands to keep defenders at bay. As a run blocker, he will put defenders in the dirt once his hands get latched on, showing his tough and nasty mentality.

McGary is on the team’s radar as he has said that they met with him at the Combine and on a visit at the University of Washington earlier this month.

Though the draft class is deep with offensive tackles, it should not be surprising if they consider the player who’s seen as a second rounder to most at No. 28 overall.
