Chargers’ Roderic Teamer could be slated to fill in for Adrian Phillips

The Chargers have had a handful of undrafted free agents that have found success.

Is safety Roderic Teamer the next in line to follow in the footsteps of some of these players?

It’s very possible, and that could start as soon as this weekend.

According to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper, there’s a strong chance that Teamer could get the start at strong safety in Week 3 against the Texans.

Finding the right replacement for the injured Adrian Phillips is one of the team’s main focal point during the next few days at practice.

Los Angeles may not have the same caliber of talent as Phillips and Derwin James, but they have the pieces to make a formidable unit until they return.

Yesterday, we said that the team would likely go with Jaylen Watkins at free safety and then move Rayshawn Jenkins down into the box to play strong safety this weekend.

But coach Anthony Lynn did say that Teamer was the team’s backup strong safety before Phillips got hurt in the loss to the Lions despite dealing with a hamstring issue.

To some, the decision to start a first-year player two veterans may be puzzling. But from preseason action, Teamer made a statement why he is worthy of filling in for the absence of Phillips.

Teamer played similar roles as Phillips, whether it was at linebacker, as a slot corner, as an additional pass rusher or as a deep safety.

In the three games he played, the former Tulane product showed a lot of promise. He played the most snaps in the first two games (93) and was all over the field.

Nothing is set and stone yet, but Teamer would be an enticing option to fill in for the injured Phillips.

Depending on whether they are in base or dime, Jenkins, Watkins and rookie Nasir Adderley are still capable of being interchangable, giving the secondary a few different looks.
