Chargers release safety Jahleel Addae

The Chargers are on their way to clearing up cap space before the new league year begins. Los Angeles has released safety Jahleel Addae, according to ESPN’s Eric D. Williams.

L.A. elected to re-sign Addae to a four-year deal worth $22 million that included $8 million guaranteed back in 2017. With the release, the Chargers free up $5 million while creating $1 million in dead money, according to OverTheCap.com.

Addae had a below average season after switching from strong safety to free safety. He was a very likable player in the locker room, and the coaching staff always credited him for his presence and intense style of play, which is why they release came as a bit of a surprise.

Addae was the odd man out in the young and growing secondary, seeing the likes of cornerback Desmond King and safeties Derwin James and Adrian Phillips all earn All-Pro honors, with two of them earning trips to the Pro Bowl.

Recording 75 tackles despite playing a full 16-game season looks fine on paper, but the 28-year old struggled significantly in his new role in 2018, leaving them no choice but to let him hit the already stacked safety market.
