Chargers Re-sign DB Jaylen Watkins

The Chargers are bringing back defensive back Jaylen Watkins.

Watkins was in the mix to start at safety during the preseason. He was receiving first team reps at free safety prior to his injury. Promising? I’m not so sure. But Watkins had earned a chance to compete. Watkins has versatility to play just about any position in the secondary. The team values that. The former Gator spent most of the next four years in Philadelphia, and was a part of the team that won Super Bowl LII. For his career, Watkins has tallied 56 tackles and eight passes defended, and was a major part of the Eagles’ secondary in 2016 and 2017, starting games each year.

He might not have played much last year. The Chargers do have plenty of talent in the secondary. Perhaps he gets a chance to compete outside at corner. Maybe they end up liking him deep at safety. He might not even make the final 53. Who knows? But the team likes him enough to bring him back even despite an ACL tear.
