Chargers RB Melvin Gordon expresses regret about missing training camp

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon had one job on Sunday, and that was to get into the end zone from less than a yard out in the final minute of the game against the Tennessee Titans. He failed on his first attempt, and followed that up by losing the football.

There was a lot of emotion from Gordon after the loss.

“You’re never supposed to let them see you sweat. I’m so mad at myself because I never do that. I shouldn’t have and I won’t (again),” Gordon said.

It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows for Gordon since his return to the field after holding out because of a contract dispute.

This was his opportunity to show that he’s worth the $13 million a year that he originally wanted, but it hasn’t been the case, and now many are questioning the purpose of the holdout.

Given his struggles, Gordon was asked whether he would’ve done anything different with his holdout.

“I don’t know, it’s tough. I know I won’t miss another training camp again. I can tell you that, but if I was to go back, I can’t say. Just with the running back thing, we want to get paid,” Gordon said.

Even though Gordon admits to wishing he was there at training camp earlier to ensure that he was in football shape from the get-go, he doesn’t necessarily feel like he’s wrong for holding out.

Since his return, Gordon has been the primary running back. But there isn’t enough evidence that suggests he should be in that role. He’s averaging 2.5 yards per carry.

The offensive line deserves some blame for his inefficiency, but signs of rust are evident when watching him run the ball. Those range from not seeing running lanes when they’re there to stopping his feet before the line of scrimmage.
