Maybe the Chargers were due.
Due some good luck. Due to break someone else's heart instead of having theirs broken.
Whether it was fate, or just finally making some plays when it counted, the Chargers pulled off an improbable victory Sunday in Atlanta, rallying from 17 points down to upset the Falcons 33-30 in overtime.
The winning points came 5:59 into overtime on Josh Lambo's fourth field goal of the game, a 42-yarder, that improved San Diego to 3-4. Lambo had tied the game at 30-30 with 19 seconds left in regulation on a 33-yard kick.
Atlanta had a chance to win it in regulation, but Matt Bryant's 58-yard try glanced off the outside of the left upright. The Falcons also had the ball first in overtime, but a fourth-down gamble by coach Dan Quinn failed when Denzel Perryman tackled Devonta Freeman for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-1 at the Falcons 45.
Philip Rivers led the way, as usual, with 371 yards passing, including 140 to Tyrell Williams. Melvin Gordon had 131 yards rushing and receiving and scored all three San Diego touchdowns.
Atlanta got a big game from Julio Jones (174 yards) but was held to just three points in the second half. Perryman also had a key interception for the Chargers, and rookie Joey Bosa had two sacks.
The Chargers will complete the first half of the season next Sunday in Denver against a Broncos team they defeated on Oct. 13 at Qualcomm Stadium.
