Chargers QB Philip Rivers’ status up in the air for Seahawks game

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said that he was open to limiting the amount of reps that his starters would get in the preseason. Through two weeks, Lynn has stuck to his word.

With Week 3 of preseason approaching, there’s a good chance that nothing changes. The third game is well-known for being the one game where starters typically see the field for a full half, but it wouldn’t be surprising if we see the second, third and fourth teams for the most part.

One of the notable players we have yet to see take a single snap is quarterback Philip Rivers. According to Lynn, the only way we will see the veteran is if he says that he wants to play against the Seahawks on Saturday.

“If Philip comes to me and says, ‘Coach, I need a series or two,’ he’s going to get it, but as of right now [he hasn’t],” Lynn said with a laugh, per the Orange County Register’s Gilbert Manzano.

Rivers recently said that the joint practices the Chargers had were super valuable to him. He, along with the rest of the starters, was able to get a good amount of work with the Rams and Saints.

Even though fans are eager to see the first team play for the full half, staying healthy is key to Los Angeles. They are without offensive tackle Russell Okung, wide receiver Keenan Allen and safety Derwin James, so the last thing they want is to lose the heart and soul of their offense.

We can expect the majority of the first-team defense to play on Saturday, but the amount of playing time remains to be seen.
