Chargers players not happy with decision to play Steelers’ anthem

It’s been evident that whenever a game is played at Dignity Health Sports Park, the majority of the people in the crowd are going to made up of opposing team’s fans.

That was the case on Sunday night with Steelers fans flooding the stands, but it was one the the most intense crowds witnessed since the Chargers started playing there a year ago.

The chaos was noted by the commentators that were calling the game and millions of people on social media. Everyone was aware that it was essentially a home game for Pittsburgh, but it became even more like one in the fourth quarter.

In an unexpected manner, the opening of the Styx song “Renegade”, which is the anthem of Steelers home games, started playing over the speakers following the Chargers first touchdown of the game.

“Renegade” stopped playing and then quickly transitioned into Rick Astley’s hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

The setup of the Steelers anthem being played was never to poke at the Chargers. It was to serve as a joke, which may have been planned prior to the game, but it was delivered at the worst time possible.

“It was crazy. They started playing their theme music. I don’t know what we were doing — that little soundtrack, what they do on their home games. I don’t know why we played that,” running back Melvin Gordon said.

“We’re used to not having any fans here. It does suck, though, when they’re playing their music in the fourth quarter. We’re the ones at home. I don’t know who’s in charge of that but they probably should be fired,” guard Forrest Lamp said, per Los Angeles Times’ Jeff Miller.

The crowd isn’t something to blame in Los Angeles’ loss, but it only tacks on to the list of face-palming components from yesterday’s game.
