Chargers placing safety Adrian Phillips on injured reserve

Chargers safety Adrian Phillips is the latest to be placed on the injured reserve.

Coach Anthony Lynn confirmed Phillips suffered a broken forearm in Sunday’s loss to the Lions and that he will spend time on the IR.

Lynn said that he is a candidate to return this season, but he will have to miss at least eight weeks.

Phillips now joins safety Derwin James and cornerback Trevor Williams on the injured reserve. Only two players can return from the IR.

“It will be the two that we feel like can help us win football games,” Lynn said at media availability, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

When James is healthy, it’s almost certain that he is a lock to return. The absence of the former Florida State product has been felt through two games, and they will need him the most as they’re pushing for a playoff spot late.

It’ll likely come down to Williams and Phillips with the advantage leaning towards the former All-Pro safety.

Even though the cornerback position is thin, Michael Davis is going to return soon from a hamstring injury, which should give them a viable option opposite of Casey Hayward again.

Phillips gives the team a James esque player that can do it all, whether it’s stopping the run or covering positional players.
