Chargers’ Philip Rivers absent for start of offseason workouts

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was not in attendance when the team kicked off its offseason workouts Monday, according to ESPN’s Eric D. Williams.

Instead of showing up for the voluntary workouts, Rivers is enjoying vacation time in Florida for Easter break with his family, according to coach Anthony Lynn.

Rivers and his wife recently welcomed their ninth child.

The veteran quarterback is headed into the final year of his contract. But the reasoning behind his absence from the start of workouts should not be concerning that he’s skipping out to create more time to think about it.

At the beginning of the offseason, general manager Tom Telesco said that the two parties were going to work on that, even though Rivers denied, stating there was no progress at that time.

Rivers, 37, isn’t getting any younger and there were concerns that he was regressing the past few seasons. But the former North Carolina State product proved that he’s worthy of an extension when he posted the campaign he did in 2018.

Rivers guided Los Angeles to a 12-4 record and back into the playoffs for the first time since 2013. He threw for 4,308 yards and 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

L.A. continues to do their homework on the quarterback draft class, but the likely extension and addition of Tyrod Taylor signifies that they’re going to hold off another year on addressing the position.
