The sweepstakes to acquire wide receiver Josh Gordon was awarded to the Seattle Seahawks on Friday.
The Chargers, who were No. 10 on the waiver wire, were among the potential destinations for Gordon. But they elected to not make a claim for him.
Los Angeles could have afforded to snag Gordon. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are among the league’s dynamic tandems, but they haven’t been at their best in recent weeks and they’re thin at the position due to injuries.
The New England Patriots released Gordon off injured reserve after sustaining a minor knee injury.
Prior to his release, Gordon amassed 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown in six games with the Patriots.
Gordon would’ve given quarterback Philip Rivers another big wide receiver who is capable of beating defensive backs with his pure physicality.
It’s no surprise that Los Angeles didn’t put in a claim simply. General manager Tom Telesco is notorious for taking the conservative route and there may have been some question marks surrounding his character even though he seems to have been clean ever since returning.
Nonetheless, the Chargers will look to get their offense moving in the right direction with what they have under their new play-caller, Shane Steichen.
