Report: Chargers’ Melvin Gordon could be close to ending holdout

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon might be back on the field soon. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Gordon’s holdout could be coming to an end, though no final decisions have been made on when.

Originally, it was expected that Gordon would return between weeks 6 and 8, but he has the itch to get on the field sooner than that to show his value. Just last week, he said that he was going to play somewhere this season and it would be a waste of talent if he sat out the whole season.

Without Gordon, Los Angeles ranks No. 13 in the league with 111.7 rushing yards per game. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson have done a nice job carrying the load, leaving some in uncertainty about whether the Chargers brass wants Gordon back.

Gordon is scheduled to make $5.6 million in the final year of his rookie deal. His camp was given permission to seek a trade, but they were unable to make any progress with that.

If Gordon was to return as early as this week, it’s unlikely he would play this weekend against the Dolphins. At earliest, he will suit up for the Week 5 matchup between the Broncos.
