Chargers LG Dan Feeney to start over Forrest Lamp

The left guard position was one of the most monitored competitions between Dan Feeney and Forrest Lamp this summer.

After months of battling it out for the starting job, Feeney got the nod. Coach Anthony Lynn said that the former Indiana product will start Week 1 against the Colts.

The decision came as a bit of a surprise considering Lamp was dominant in his return after dealing with a knee injury that kept him off the field for the past two seasons.

In four games, he only allowed two pressures on 103 pass-blocking snaps and earned an 86.1 pass-blocking grade, per Pro Football Focus.

Along with that, it was also hard to gauge who was more superior at the guard position considering the majority of Feeney’s in-game reps came from center because Mike Pouncey didn’t play.

Even though he won’t be starting, Lynn did say that Lamp will rotate in at either guard spot early on.

From Lynn’s comments, this could suggest that the battle will continue to determine who will ultimately be the long-term started between Lamp, Feeney and Michael Schofield.

Last year, Joe Barksdale came in as the starting right tackle. Barksdale and Sam Tevi rotated at the position, and eventually, Tevi became the starter.

There are many fans that are bummed about the decision, but there’s still a strong chance that Lamp can win the coaching staff over when he sees the field this season.
