Chargers land dream prospect in latest CBS mock draft

If the Chargers want to get the best out of quarterback Philip Rivers in his last couple of seasons, they will have to keep him upright. So why not acquire the pass protector in the 2019 NFL draft?

That’s what goes down in CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson’s latest mock draft when Los Angeles lands former Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard at No. 28 overall.

Dillard is the best pass-blocking tackle in this draft and with Philip Rivers expected to play indefinitely, protecting his blindside is a priority.

Just months ago, there were questions whether or not Dillard would even get drafted in the first round. But after a successful Senior Bowl and Combine, the former Washington State product may not even get past the top-20.

Dillard is by far the pass protecter in this year’s offensive tackle group. He would be a Day 1 starter at right tackle for L.A. with the ability to slide over to the left side eventually.

He provide an immediate upgrade over Sam Tevi, who struggled in his 2018 campaign. Dillard needs to fix a couple technical flaws and get more physical in the run game, but he has smooth footwork and body control to adjust to any edge rusher on the move.

Though miracles would have to occur with so many teams in need of offensive line help that sit in front of them, the Chargers have seen it happen before, most recently with safety Derwin James in last year’s draft.
