The Chargers have obvious positions of need to address still at the offensive tackle, defensive tackle and free safety spots. But the cornerback position is one that many of people aren’t talking about right now that could be atop of the team’s list.
Los Angeles recently had dinner with former Vanderbilt cornerback Joejuan Williams prior to their Pro Day, according to NFL Draft Analyst’s Tony Pauline.
Williams (6’3″, 211) is touted as a second or third round selection. The former Commodore is a skilled press-man cornerback, who has the size, length, aggressive nature and athleticism to flourish in the NFL.
This wouldn’t be the only evidence, as defensive back coaches from L.A. were also spotted at Central Michigan’s Pro Day to take a hard look at CB Sean Bunting.
Bunting, a riser as of late, is being seen as a Day 3 selection, but could sneak into the third round. Like Williams, he is a physical and scrappy press cornerback that possesses enticing traits to work with.
All of these sightings and reports make me believe that the team is doing their due diligence, but also are putting the position into more consideration than most people realize as we head into the 2019 NFL draft.
The Chargers recently tendered Trevor Williams and saw Jason Verrett get shipped to the 49ers on Thursday. When looking ahead, Michael Davis will be a restricted free agent at the end of the 2019 season, Casey Hayward won’t be getting any younger and contract negotiations will be made with Desmond King soon.
Unlikely to be taken in the first two rounds, given their other bigger positions of need, Los Angeles may elect to take one with their third round selection at the earliest. Although it’s not particularly deep, this year’s cornerback class has plenty of enticing mid-round options.
