Chargers expected to sign LB Thomas Davis

After starting their day off with zilch on Monday, the Chargers are expected to land their first signing of free agency. Los Angeles is expected to sign former Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis.

Davis, 36, was drafted with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft and played strong safety his first season in the NFL. The former Georgia product converted to outside linebacker in year two and has played the position ever since.

From 2012 through 2018, Davis and his former teammate, Luke Kuechly became one of the best linebacker duos in NFL history.

In 2018, Davis was suspended for the first four games of the season after violating the league’s PED policy but still recorded 79 tackles, six passes defended and three tackles for a loss in 12 games.

The Bolts desperately needed to add a linebacker corps that was hit with injuries in 2018. Despite re-signing Denzel Perryman on a two-year deal last Friday, Davis will bring veteran leadership and depth to a young linebacking core.
