Chargers hit a home run in Draft Wire’s latest mock draft

The 2019 NFL draft is just days away as the first round will kick off on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. The Chargers will be anxiously waiting to see who falls to them as the night goes on.

It’s difficult to gauge who will be available for Los Angeles at No. 28, or if they will consider trading down to acquire more selections. But Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling drew up a scenario that sees the team staying put and making a slam dunk selection.

The Chargers selected former Washington cornerback Byron Murphy.

There are bigger needs elsewhere on the roster, but the Bolts need to pounce on the value here. Murphy is the most complete corner in this year’s class, despite concerns about his lack of size or speed.

Cornerback has been getting more attention as a possible first round selection for the Bolts as of late. Even though many are expecting an offensive tackle or defensive tackle with their first selection, general manager Tom Telesco has a knack of pulling surprises in the draft.

Murphy is a lot of people’s No. 1 rated corner and is projected to go higher than the Chargers’ spot, but he very well could slip, as his size and speed might concern some teams.

Murphy would be a perfect fit in the Bolts’ defense as he shows excellent burst, instincts and ball skills to be a Pro Bowl caliber corner. That paired with his sticky off man coverage is a phenomenal combination to be included in the secondary.

This would be the dream scenario, especially if the top tackles and interior defensive linemen are off the board.
