Chargers HC Brandon Staley, assistants attend LSU Pro Day

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was among the many NFL personnel attending LSU’s Pro Day on Wednesday.

Staley was joined by defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to get a look at a handful of former Tigers, including top cornerback prospect Derek Stingley Jr.

Stingley, who did not participate at the NFL Scouting Combine as he continued to recover from a Lisfranc injury he suffered on the first day of camp last summer, ran an unofficial 4.37 40-yard dash and recorded a vertical of 38.5″ and a broad jump of 10’2.”

Staley watched real close and gave Stingley pointers while Ansley took him through some of the drills.

“His whole reason he just told me for coming out here, he wanted to see if I still had the determination and like just the power to go out there and just perform,” Stingley said. “And when he seen it, he said that’s what he was waiting to see. And that’s what a lot of people were trying to see.”

During just his freshman season, Stingley was already being tabbed as a first-rounder after he posted six interceptions, 21 passes defended. But since then, he only played ten college games over his sophomore and junior campaigns.

While uber-talented and the testing should’ve helped his stock, Stingley has durability concerns, which could cause him to take a slide in this month’s draft. With a coach like Staley, who covets defensive backs in his system, he could be prepared to trade up potentially should he start to fall.

Other LSU prospects that should’ve garnered Los Angeles’ coach’s interest include defensive tackle Neil Farrell, linebacker Damone Clark, and cornerback Cordale Flott, among others.
