Chargers fire coach Mike McCoy

SAN DIEGO _ The Mike McCoy Era is over.

The San Diego Chargers announced after the 37-27 loss Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs that McCoy, their coach since 2013, will not return for the 2017 season.

McCoy directed the Chargers to a 27-37 record over his four regular seasons and, in 2013, the franchise's only playoff victory over the past seven years.

The team has lost 23 of its last 32 games, finishing last both seasons in the AFC West.

"Mike McCoy is a man of high character, and we thank him for his dedication to the Chargers," said Chargers President of Football Operations John Spanos, who played a key role in hiring McCoy, in a statement released by the team. "The decision to dismiss Mike was made in the best interests of our franchise. Our team's disappointing performance has not matched this team's potential and has fallen short of the demanding standards that we seek to impose throughout our organization.

"Our comprehensive search for a new head coach begins immediately."

"I want to thank Mike for his tireless work and commitment to this organization," General Manager Tom Telesco said in the statement. "He instilled a culture of work ethic and togetherness that we can build on for years to come."

McCoy's overall record was 28-38 (.424 percent), including a 1-1 mark in the 2013 postseason.

He inherited a team coming off a 7-9 season in 2012 and led San Diego to a 9-7 record and its first playoff berth since 2009.
