Chargers’ Drue Tranquill continues to make mark as special teams stud

Last week, Chargers fullback Derek Watt was recognized for his efforts on special teams, but it doesn’t stop there.

Rookie linebacker Drue Tranquill has taken advantage of every opportunity that’s been thrown his way and it continued to stand out in Sunday’s victory over the Packers.

Arguably the standout play of the game was by Tranquill when he blocked Packers punter J.K. Scott’s punt in third quarter. It gave the team great field position, and it resulted in their first touchdown of the day by running back Melvin Gordon.

Aside from the blocked punt, Tranquill continued rack up a pair of notable tackles. The former Notre Dame product is tied for second in special teams tackles on the season (9), one behind Lions’ Miles Killebrew.

As a special teams player, which is a speed and physical role, he is performing at a high level.

Tranquill hasn’t played a consistent amount of snaps on the defensive side of the ball, but when he is on the playing field as a sub-package linebacker, he has made some absolutely dominating plays at crucial times.

The rookie’s play hasn’t gone unnoticed and if he continues to perform like this, it won’t be long until he is the starter in their base defense moving forward.
