Chargers could look within division to find depth at LB

The Chargers made the decision to re-sign linebacker Denzel Perryman on a two-year deal last Friday. Despite bringing Perryman back, Los Angeles is far from being satisfied with the position.

With the NFL’s tampering period underway, one player that could draw the team’s interest, is a player that the Bolts saw on a consistent basis. Former Broncos LB Brandon Marshall is the one that could be on their radar.

Marshall, 29, had two years remaining on a four-year extension he signed in 2016 and was set to make base salaries of $6.5 million in 2019 and $7 million in 2020 before being released in February.

In 2018, Marshall received a 64.2 grade from Pro Football Focus, and was no longer worth his large salary. He had clearly lost a step last season, after struggling with injuries, ultimately missing five games.

In the 11 games he played in, Marshall racked up 42 tackles and one pass breakup. The year before, he was a bit more productive, starting all 16 games and finishing with 106 tackles, three sacks, and four passes defensed.

Despite Perryman being brought back, Hayes Pullard and Kyle Emanuel are also unrestricted free agents. The likeliness of them being brought back in 2019 is very slim, which creates more of a hole for depth to be added at the position.

Although Marshall isn’t the player he was a couple of years ago, he can still be a serviceable veteran for the Bolts who are looking for inside and outside versatility at the position.

Given his injury history and the fact that he will be 30 years old when the season starts, if the Chargers were to get him on a deal worth $5 or 6 million per year, it might be worth considering. Anything higher than that then they’re better off looking elsewhere, including the rest of the market and the draft.
