Chargers could consider reuniting with Tre Boston to fill free safety void

The Chargers elected to make a decision that no one saw coming with the release of free safety Jahleel Addae last week. Although it was a necessary and wise move, it just created a major hole at the position.

Could Los Angeles elect to bring a player back that was previously on the team a year ago to fill that void?

Tre Boston, 26, was signed in 2017 after starting his career with the Panthers. After one season with the Bolts, they chose to let him go after his one-year stint because of the selection of safety Derwin James in the 2018 NFL draft. Boston ultimately went to the Cardinals.

Boston finished his tenure with Arizona by tallying 79 tackles, nine passes defensed and three interceptions.

Boston, now a free agent, played a huge role for Los Angeles. He took 1,039-of-1,047 snaps, which was the most snaps of anyone on the unit. Boston amassed a career-high in both tackles and interceptions with 56 tackles and five interceptions.

The former North Carolina product was Pro Football Focus’ No. 1 free safety in coverage that year, allowing just one reception every 193.7 coverage snaps. He ranked No. 9 in the NFL with an 87.8 coverage grade.

General manager Tom Telesco hasn’t had a track record of bringing back former players since taking over in 2013. But there isn’t any reason why not to give Boston a look. He played well for his lone season, is familiar with the system and the price would be cheap.

Though it could be the last thing on their minds to bring in the former Charger, filling the hole at the free safety positions remains at question.
