Chargers concerned with WR Mike Williams’ availability vs. Lions

It has not been a good day for the Chargers, as the injury-related news continues to pile up.

First, it was cornerback Trevor Williams heading to the injured reserve. Next, it was learning that tight end Hunter Henry suffered a tibial fracture. Now, there’s some concern with wide receiver Mike Williams and his status for Sunday’s game matchup against the Lions.

Williams left Los Angeles’ regular season opener against the Colts with a knee injury and didn’t return. Following the contest, the former Clemson product said his knee tightened up while Indianapolis went on its game-tying drive. He then said that he was fine and appeared to be walking OK.

On Monday, coach Anthony Lynn said that Williams was getting looked at in hopes of it not being too serious. Considering there are some concerns that he may be on a limited snap count or could possibly be ruled out, tests must not have looked too promising.

We will find out more as the week goes on, but losing Williams this weekend would be huge. Keenan Allen would remain the No. 1 option, but behind him becomes a little bit more worrisome.

Travis Benjamin would likely become the No. 2 WR, while Geremy Davis and Dontrelle Inman serve as the third and fourth wideouts. All three players have yet to do anything in game action that would be worth labeling them as reliable options.

It would be a smart move to call up a proven receiver from the practice squad in Andre Patton, who shined this preseason.
