Chargers injured cornerback Trevor Williams said he expects to play again this season after sustaining a quadricep injury, which landed him on the injured reserve.
“I’ll definitely be back before the season is over, Williams said, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.
After emerging in 2017, Williams’ 2018 season was cut short to a knee injury. A few months later, Williams entered the summer in contention for the second cornerback spot with Michael Davis.
Unfortunately, Williams had been derailed with another injury throughout the course of training camp and preseason. He had not practiced since before the first preseason game against the Cardinals.
Throughout the month of August, coach Anthony Lynn did not give any information in regards what the injury was nor the severity of it. It was until the first injury report of the regular season when we found out it was his quadricep. He was then put on the injured reserve.
Williams’ absence was a big loss to the defense, but it became even worse when cornerback Michael Davis was hit with a hamstring injury moments into the regular season opener, leaving the positional group thin.
With Williams currently on the injured reserve, he isn’t eligible to return until Week 9. Williams and safety Derwin James will be the two players designated to return. Before 2017, the rule allowed just one player.
There’s no specific timeframe on when he will return, but having Williams back healthy will be huge for a Chargers team that will be pushing hard for a playoff spot around then.
