Do the Chargers have the best secondary in the NFL, heading into the 2019 season? The majority of the general population certainly believes so.
Los Angeles was among the teams that were in a Twitter poll made by Fox Sports: NFL. They asked who had the best secondary in the league. The others included were the Bears, Browns and Ravens.
In a very close finish, the Bolts came out on top with 34 percent of the votes in favor of them. Right behind them was Cleveland who finished with 31 percent, followed by Chicago with 22 percent and Baltimore with 13 percent.
When looking at the roster, it’s easy to make an argument for L.A. possessing one of the top, if not, best secondaries in the NFL going into this upcoming season.
With the addition of rookie safety Nasir Adderley, the second year of Derwin James, the rise of Adrian Phillips, the dynamic duo at the cornerback position made up by Desmond King and Casey Hayward, and a healthy Trevor Williams coming back, the Chargers’ 2019 secondary has the feel of an iconic group.
Defensive backs coach Ron Milus has done an excellent job of the position. Los Angeles has had six consecutive years of Pro Bowlers in the secondary. In 2018, they sent James and Phillips to Orlando, FL, while also boasting three All-Pro players.
It’s also noteworthy that L.A. will have the premiere pass rush led by Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa, along with the arrival of defensive tackle Jerry Tillery, to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, making life all easier for the members in the defensive backfield.
