Chargers activate RB Melvin Gordon, promote WR Andre Patton

The Chargers made a couple moves on the offensive side of the ball ahead of Sunday’s contest against the Dolphins.

Los Angeles activated running back Melvin Gordon and promoted wide receiver Andre Patton from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced on Saturday.

To make room, defensive end Chris Peace was waived and cornerback Dontae Johnson was released.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that Gordon was in good shape, but he was uncertain if he was going to play. RB Justin Jackson was ruled out on Friday with a foot injury, which led to the activation of Gordon this weekend.

He is expected to be on a limited snap count, similar to Jackson’s load with Austin Ekeler receiving the majority of the carries.

Patton being promoted to the active was a must after Mike Williams and Travis Benjamin were hit with injuries. The positional group is thin behind the dynamic Keenan Allen and they will need Patton, Geremy Davis and Dontrelle Inman to step up.
