Charge over death of man flung from car

A NSW man is behind bars over the death of a car passenger who was flung out of the vehicle after it crashed into a power pole and split in half.

The small car hit the power pole in Newcastle's northern suburbs on Saturday night, launching the male passenger from the vehicle.

He died at the scene.

The driver, 31, was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Police on Sunday afternoon charged him with dangerous driving occasioning death and a back-up charge of negligent driving occasioning death.

He was remanded in custody ahead of a scheduled appearance at Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
