Charge nurse Kirstine Burns named our Dumfries Woman of the Year 2020

Our Dumfries Woman of the Year has been revealed as senior charge nurse in paediatrics Kirstine Burns.

She was nominated by her daughter, Natalie Little, and was thrilled to receive a bumper hamper of fabulous gifts from the manager of the Boots High Street store, Heather Knaggs.

Judges agreed she stood out from the many entries we received after teaming up with Boots on Dumfries High Street for the competition.

Heather, who took the gifts to hand over to the busy nurse at DGRI this week, said: “We picked her for the care and dedication she has given to children in Dumfries for many years and, of course, in the current situation. I know she’s also a well respected leader of her wonderful team.

“What struck me is like so many mums, my own included, despite the pressures of a career and other life events she’s also a brilliant support to her family, as described by Natalie.”

In her entry Natalie revealed why her mum is a hero and an inspiration to herself and to many people in Dumfries.

She said: “I’d be lost without my mum. She’s had a hard three years and is finally turning a corner. We’ve recently lost my Papa and she still continues to keep a smile on her face and help everyone else.

“She works full time taking care of sick children and, on her day off, watches my girls while I work.

“She does my ironing, cooks me meals, runs after me when I’ve forgotten things and generally keeps me sane. She truly deserves a treat.”

Thanks to a collection of generous Dumfries businesses – to which we are very grateful –, Kirstine was presented with an amazing collection of prizes including:
● A Boots Beauty Hall hamper worth more than £150, including the No7 Mother’s Day skincare collection, Armani Si fragrance gift, Benefit cosmetics, Lancome gift and Dior gift.

● A new Vitality Boost Bracelet from Pegasus Equestrian Jewellery;
● A voucher for a full body massage with hot stones therapy from Beauty by Shana;
● A beautiful floral bouquet from M&S.

And there was more good news for those who entered the competition.

Boots manager, Heather, said: “We had lots of amazing entries to pick from and it was very difficult to pick just one so there is a voucher for a makeover session and £10 of products winging it’s way to all the other nominees. We hope to see them for a treat when this craziness subsides.”
