Chappell Roan has walked back her praise of French model Bridget Bardot following her passing after learning of the model’s alt-right views.
The French actress and model passed away earlier this week at the age of 91 in her hometown of the French Riviera, her foundation has confirmed via the following statement: “The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with immense sadness the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation.”
At the time, Roan — who name-checked her in the very first line of one of her most famous songs, “Red Wine Supernova”, which begins with the lyric: “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn’t know” — heralded the model on her social media.
“Rest in peace Ms. Bardot,” Roan’s initial message on Sunday read. “She was my inspiration for red wine supernova.”
After being inundated by messages from fans informing her of Bardot’s far-right views, she subsequently left the following Instagram Story:
“Holy shit I did not know all that insane shit Ms. Bardot stood for,” Roan wrote via Instagram Stories. “I do not condone this. Very disappointing to learn.”

Brigitte Bardot’s controversial past
Brigitte Bardot’s legacy has become increasingly complicated in the decades since her 1960s heyday as a screen icon and sex symbol, including acclaimed roles in art-house films like Contempt.
Beyond cinema, she is remembered by some for her long-running animal rights activism and the creation of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in the 1980s.
For others, however, her public image is dominated by her repeated anti-Muslim remarks, which led to five convictions in France for inciting racial hatred.
