Chappell Roan departs Wasserman as Epstein files spark backlash

Pop star Chappell Roan announced Monday she is no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman, citing a need for representation that aligns with her moral values.

Why it matters: Her departure marks the latest public backlash against Wasserman, who also serves as head of the Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee, following the release of the Epstein files.

Driving the news: "As of today, I am no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman," Roan posted on Instagram. "I hold my teams to the highest standards and have a duty to protect them as well."

  • "No artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values. I have deep respect and appreciation for the agents and staff who work tirelessly for their artists and I refuse to passively stand by," Roan added.
  • "Artists deserve representation that aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity. This decision reflects my belief that meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust."

The big picture: Wasserman has faced backlash given his presence on convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein's plane in 2002 and the release of suggestive emails from 2003 between him and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.

  • Wasserman issued an apology on Jan. 31 and said he is "terribly sorry for having any association with either of them" and that he was on the plane as part of "a humanitarian trip."
  • Several artists and bands have publicly demanded he step down from his agency, including Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino and Beach Bunny. Wasserman also represents Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Pharrell and other big names.
  • Los Angeles politicians have called for Wasserman to step away from the Olympics committee.

What to watch: Other artists are considering cutting ties and some of the company's agents are exploring spinning off the music representation business, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

  • Wasserman did not immediately respond to Axios' Monday evening request for comment.
