Chappell, Gavaskar cricket caps auctioned

Cricket tragics are being encouraged to stump up for a good cause with the caps of legends Greg Chappell and Sunil Gavaskar to be auctioned for charity.

All proceeds from the online auction will be donated to the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation, helping to fund vital clinical care and research.

The fundraiser comes as Australia and India vie for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the deciding fourth Test in Brisbane.

Chappell's 1977 baggy green cap and Gavaskar's 1971 Test cap have been donated by Australian art dealer Steven Nasteski, who purchased the items at auction last year from the collection of former England captain Sir Geoffrey Boycott.

"I thought I could bring the two great leaders of their day together by purchasing and donating these two caps for the benefit of all small children in my home town of Sydney," Mr Nasteski said.

"Children deserve the best healthcare possible and I'm hoping this contribution will help achieve this."

The sale is being managed by auction house Pickles, which in December managed the sale of Sir Donald Bradman's first baggy green cap for $450,000.

It also managed the charitable auctioning of Shane Warne's Test cap for $1,007,500 - the world record price for an item of cricket memorabilia.

One of Australia's greatest batsmen, Chappell played 87 Tests and scored 24 centuries.

His cap - in an era when replacements were issued for each series - was handed to him at the start of Australia's doomed 1977 tour of England.

England reclaimed the Ashes with a 3-0 series victory and Chappell, having defected to play World Series Cricket, relinquished the Test captaincy.

Gavaskar, one of Test cricket's most prolific run-scorers, earned his 1971 cap during India's first series victory in England.

Interested parties are asked to register prior to bidding in the auction, which ends on Sunday afternoon.
