Chapelizod residents outrage as local bus services are jam packed before getting to village

Residents in Chapelizod have expressed their outrage as their local bus services have been left jam packed once again with the return of the school commute.

Locals have been left waiting over an hour to board a bus as services have been packed full before arriving to the village.

Many have aired their frustration with the 26 and 67 routes on local group Chapelizod Chap Lips, with some having to walk as far as the West County Hotel on the Old Lucan Road to catch a bus before it fills.

One resident messaged the page, and said: "50 mins waiting for a bus to stop. I usually would get the bus from outside the school, I've now walked back as far as the West County to get on a bus an empty 26 bus finally arrived."

While another commented: "Yesterday my journey to work (Ballsbridge) took 2 hours. I got onto bus going to Maynooth, got off at the Oval and still 4 buses passed without stopping, there were nearly 40 people at the stop."

And a third added: "Sad but true! I along with many others was at the bus stop at 7.40am and 4 full buses passed by yesterday morning until an almost empty 26 bus arrived at 8.25am.

"Many people are walking back as far as county hotel in the hopes of getting on a bus. The 26 bus at 8.25am seems to give us some chance of reaching the city centre for 9am."

A fourth said: "Yep this continued all morning yesterday. I had to get a taxi in the end about 9.15am.

"Similar this morning but I travelled earlier. Had to wait from 7 until finally the West County 7.25 came along. It was full by the time it got to St Mary’s gate to the park."

Dublin Live has previously reported on massive queues in the area during peak times in the morning.

Pictures previously showed long lines running from a bus stop through to the neighbouring housing estate Glenaulin.

In a statement to Dublin Live, Dublin Bus said: "We are aware of increased customer demand in the Chapelizod area. Customers in Chapelizod also have access to Routes 25, 66, 66a/b, and 66e.

"Dublin Bus is committed to meeting this demand and has made significant improvements to these routes in recent months. These improvements include:

  • Additional departures added to Route 26 at 6.25, 7.25, 8.25 and 9.40 to meet customer demand in the morning peak
  • The introduction of a brand new Route 66e serving Chapelizod
  • 18 additional departures on Route 66 per week, with earlier start times in both directions Monday to Friday, in addition to a considerably enhanced Sunday service
  • Earlier first bus from Monday to Friday in both directions on Route 66a.  On Sundays, there are now earlier start times in both directions, in addition to two extra departures from Leixlip (Captain’s Hill) and one additional departure from Merrion Square
  • Earlier start times in both directions on Route 66b, coupled with a new Sunday service offering 20 departures in total between Leixlip and Merrion Square.

"Our full fleet is deployed on all routes, during peak commuter hours."
