Residents living in Chapelizod have been left shocked at the news that An Post branch is set to shut its doors to the village on Wednesday June 23.
Chapelizod residents will be left without a post office and forced to travel to Palmerstown or Ballyfermot to access An Post services.
The Postmaster of the branch has retired and there has been no success with finding a contractor to take on the provision of the post office.
An Post spokesman Angus Laverty said they had been left with no other option but to close the branch.
He told Dublin Live: ¨We advertised the vacancy on three separate occasions and also canvassed the local area but to no avail.
¨We have no other option but to close the office and move customers in the first instance to our Ballyfermot Upper post office at the Le Fanu Shopping Centre.
¨An Post apologises for any inconvenience and will work to ease the transition for customers.¨
Laverty said that an official notice informing local customers of the closure and outlining alternative arrangements will be posted later this week.
Speaking to Dublin Live, Fianna Fail councillor for the area Daithí de Róiste said the situation is ¨truly regrettable.¨
¨It´s not good enough that people from Chapelizod must travel to Ballyfermot and Palmerstown.
¨How can we support the growth of the village if we keep losing services and sending people elsewhere?
¨Chapelizod needs a dedicated plan that will ensure services grow over the coming years,¨ he added.
