Chaotic 'free for all' at busy Cardiff junction after crash causes traffic lights to be switched off

One of Cardiff's busiest junctions was described as a "terrifying free for all" after a crash resulted in the traffic lights being turned off.

The traffic lights at the junction between Western Avenue and Waungoron Road were turned off during rush hour on the morning of Monday, September 13, after a crash the night before brought their safety into question.

On Sunday night police were called to reports of a one-vehicle collision on Western Avenue. A spokesperson said the lights were turned off for a period of time while the scene was cleared.

However, the lights were also off on Monday morning with some describing a "free for all" for drivers on the busy four-way junction.

One driver described the scene as a "terrifying free for all", while a pedestrian unable to navigate the crossing said it was an "accident waiting to happen" and "impossible" to cross on foot.

Welsh Conservative Councillor for Llandaff and Danescourt, Sean Driscoll, posted on Twitter on Monday afternoon that the crossing had been temporarily closed and the filter light heading to Fairwater is damaged. The lights were turned back on later this morning.

Photographs from the scene show the crossing completely cordoned off, with one of the traffic light poles bent after being hit.

Cardiff Council said that it was the assumption that the road traffic collision had damaged the power pole to the lights. The lights were then turned off until a contractor arrived at the site to make sure the lights and power pole were safe.

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 9.30pm yesterday (September 12), South Wales Police attended Western Avenue, Cardiff to reports of a road traffic collision.

"The collision involved one vehicle and nobody was injured. The traffic lights were turned off for a period of time whilst the scene was cleared, officers thank the local community for their patience."

Councillor Driscoll said: "Unfortunately on Western Avenue there’s been some nasty accidents, people have been seriously injured and some have tragically lost their lives. I’m really pleased to have had the speed reduced to 30mph.

"Installing a new crossing has also made it safer for children to cross at Caewal Road. I’m grateful to our Highways officers for this work and the addition of 10 notices of the new speed limit.

"I’ve previously requested camera enforcement from the police via Go Safe Cymru. We’re continually seeing more accidents so police enforcement needs to happen now, along with Cameras and (VAS) Vehicle Activated Speed signs. It’s no good having the speed reduced if we don’t enforce it."
