Chaos for commuters as A19 was closed near Dalton Park after man climbed over railings of bridge

There was over two hours of chaos for commuters after a man climbed over the railings of a bridge in County Durham.

Emergency crews were called to the scene from 6am following concerned reports regarding the welfare of a man who man had climbed over the railings of a bridge over the A19 near Dalton Park.

Officers from Durham Constabulary subsequently closed the A19 in both directions between the Dalton Park turnoff and the A182 turnoff for Cold Hesledon leading to widespread disruption in the vicinity.

The man was thankfully brought to safety over two hours later. Both sides of the road reopened at 8.15am.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: "Shortly after 6am this morning, we received numerous reports that a man had climbed over the railings of a bridge over the A19 near Dalton Park.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed in both directions between the Dalton Park turnoff and the A182 turnoff for Cold Hesledon.

"The man was safely brought down and both lanes of the road were reopened by 8.15am. Police would like to thank motorists for their patience during this incident."

Personnel from the North East Ambulance Service were also present at the scene and representatives said that the man was taken to Sunderland Royal hospital following the incident.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: "We received a call to 999 at 6:32am this morning to an incident on the A19 near Murton. Police also went to the scene.

"We sent one Hazardous Area Response Team who took one patient to Sunderland Royal hospital."
