Chaos at start of Olympic triathlon as boat blocks competitors

The men's triathlon got off to a chaotic start at the Tokyo Olympics as a boat caused a false start.

British pair Jonathan Brownlee and Alex Yee were among the athletes affected as the start gun went off with a boat blocking part of the pontoon and preventing almost half of the field from entering the water.

The boat had to move out of the way as athletes dived into the water and began swimming.

A false start was called and the race started at the second time of asking.

Brownlee's brother Alastair won gold in this event in 2012 and 2016 but is absent after switching his focus to ironman events.

Jonathan Brownlee is looking to improve on the bronze he won in London nine years ago and silver from Rio, while 23-year-old Yee won a recent world series event in Leeds.

The Olympic triathlon consists of a 1.5km swim followed by a 40km cycle and 10km run.
