Chaos at airport as catering cart goes berserk and almost slams into plane

An American Airlines runaway catering cart caused havoc at a busy airport after it spiraled out of control and almost crashed into a plane.

Footage filmed by a passenger inside the terminal at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport shows employees scrambling to stop the vehicle which seems to have taken on a life of its own.

As the runaway cart spirals around, several workers surround it to prevent it from hitting the plane.

No driver appears to be behind the wheel of the vehicle.

The cart goes around in circles while some workers try to find a way to stop it.

The chaos ends when one of the workers drives another smaller red vehicle into the cart, slamming the machine on its side.

The video was shared on Twitter by Dr. Kevin Klauer, chief executive of the American Osteopathic Association, yesterday.

It got over six million views and 29,000 retweets.

Nobody was injured during the incident, USA Today reports.

American Airlines said in a statement: "American Airlines is investigating an incident involving a catering truck this afternoon at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

"Preliminary reports indicate that the accelerator became stuck and caused the catering cart to lose control.

"No American Airlines team members were injured and the incident resulted in one 10 minute flight delay.

"We appreciate the quick action of our team member who stopped the vehicle.

"Safety is our top priority and we are working with our partners to investigate the incident."

O'Hare saw 83.4 million passengers in 2018, making it one of the busiest airports in the US.
