Last night saw travel chaos in Scotland as a host of Edinburgh-bound flights diverted to both Glasgow and Prestwick Airports as a result of the extreme weather which hit the capital.
Torrential rain and thunderstorms meant that landing at Edinburgh Airport was out of the question for a prolonged period of time, with many pilots left with no option but to land some planes over 70 miles away at Prestwick or over 40 miles away at Glasgow Airport.
Holidaymakers returning to Edinburgh on flights from Athens, Munich, Birmingham and Katowice were diverted to Glasgow, with flights from Pisa, Budapest, Hamburg and Porto all diverting to Prestwick - some after spending a fair amount of time circling the skies over the Lanark area.
Even a Loganair flight scheduled to arrive in Edinburgh from Aberdeen landed in Glasgow, after having circled above the city for over an hour - while there were also unconfirmed reports that the Easyjet flight from Munich diverted to Glasgow with just 20 minutes of fuel left.
It seems passengers were then ferried on to Edinburgh by bus, although the flight from Birmingham took off from Glasgow to complete the short 14 minute flight to Edinburgh to complete its journey, as did a Ryanair flight from Prestwick.
The storm has also caused disruption on the ground, with the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh closed to traffic in both directions this morning, while some rail services between the two cities remain suspended.
