Chaos as "Significant number" of prison staff isolating at Addiewell jail

Addiewell jail is in turmoil after several members of staff had to isolate due to coronavirus.

The covid-19 outbreak at HMP Addiewell is said to have affected a number of prison officers.

The jail, which is run by private firm Sodexo and a "significant number" of guards are now off work.

Prison bosses have been forced to draft in staff from other jails across the country to try and plug the gap in the workforce.

Anyone who has been a close contact of the workers will also be tested.

And it's thought any prisoners suspected of having the virus will be isolated in their cell to await a diagnosis.

An HMP Addiewell spokesperson said: "Just like all communities across the country, we continue to see the impact of covid-19, and there are currently a significant number of staff who have been required to self-isolate.

"To protect staff and prisoners we continue to have public health advised controls in place.

"Separately we have a small number of managers from our other prison sites helping with some development work."
