'Chaos' after fatal crash in Darwin's outer suburbs

Police said it appeared a ute had crashed into three cars.

A 57-year-old woman has died and a 17-year-old girl has been taken to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) following a four-car collision in Berrimah this morning.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner from Territory Major Crash Investigations told ABC Radio the crash happened shortly before 8:00am, near the intersection of Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road.

"Tragically, a person has died in that crash, that person remains at the scene while the identification process is being undertaken," he said.

"It appears that one vehicle collided into another in a 'concertina effect'."

Senior Sergeant Lindner said it appeared a ute had crashed into three cars, but investigators were still gathering information.

All four cars were travelling inbound.

"The road remains closed and will do for the next few hours while major crash investigates the scene," he said.

"It occurred during peak hour this morning and threw traffic into a bit of chaos."

Roads to stay closed

Senior Sergeant Lindner said both lanes of Tiger Brennan Drive between Berrimah Road and Tivendale Road remained closed, and urged motorists to avoid the area.

"Tiger Brennan [Drive] will be closed for a number of hours — all traffic is being diverted," he said.

St John Ambulance NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the 17-year-old was transported to RDH with very minor injuries.

"They were taken for assessment only," he said.

He said prior to arriving at the scene, St John's call-takers had given advice to first responders at the crash site.

He said paramedics attempted to revive the woman when they arrived, but attempts were unsuccessful and she died at the scene.

Road toll now at three

The NT road toll for 2020 now stands at three, following the discovery of a man's body at the scene of a motorcycle crash in Darwin's rural area on Wednesday.

Police patrolling the area in Weddell found the scene at Jenkins Road, which was not immediately obvious from the road.

Police believe the man's body had been lying there for some time.

"It appears at this stage that the motorcycle was heading towards the Stuart Highway when it left the road on the right-hand side," said Detective Acting Sergeant Jeshua Kelly.

"The motorcycle has collided with a number of rocks before coming to rest in the bottom of a creek."

The 55-year-old man had been reported missing prior to the discovery of his body.

Anyone with information about the Berrimah crash is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference number 9216162.
