Chantal Joffe exhibition at Victoria Miro to explore artist's year of self-portrait painting

A new exhibition held across two London galleries will feature a series of daily self-portraits by British artist Chantal Joffe, created over the space of a year.

The acclaimed artist decided to set herself a challenge on New Year's Day last year to work on a self-portrait every day of the year, and selected works from the project will be on show at Victoria Miro in Mayfair.

The gallery's Wharf Road venue will also display works by Joffe, exploring her focus on mothers and daughters and including portraits of Joffe with her own daughter.

In an interview with the Standard last year, Joffe talked about the way she uses her own life and the lives of other people in her work. “I read it endlessly, memoir and biography and autobiography. I can’t get close enough — to try and dissolve, so I can see inside other people. I want to know how it feels to be you, and I want people to know what I’m feeling.”

Joffe is also set to design a number of artworks for Whitechapel Crossrail station, although the opening date remains unconfirmed.

Chantal Joffe will run from April 11 - May 18 at Victoria Miro and Victoria Miro Mayfair
