Train services through the Channel tunnel have been suspended after smoke was detected, it has emerged.
Kent police said on Saturday the smoke was caused by a lorry fire on the French side.
“The fire was at the French end of the tunnel and is being dealt with by the French authorities. The are no reported injuries,” a spokesman said.
“However, rail passengers are advised to expect significant delays whilst the vehicle is being recovered and fumes are cleared from the tunnels.”
The fire has led to the closure of both bores of the tunnel and all Eurostar trains are returning to their stations of origin following the incident. The tunnel is set to be closed until Saturday night.
“If you were planning to travel today, we advise you to postpone your journey and not to come to the station,” the train operator said on its website.
Eurotunnel, which operates the Le Shuttle trains carrying cars and lorries, said on Twitter that carbon dioxide detectors had been activated in one tunnel.
Eurostar passengers have been advised to call 01233 617 575 to rebook their trips or get a refund.
